Nursing Leadership ModuleAIHA Helps Develop Nurse Leaders in the Former Soviet Union
Students were selected by a committee of AIHA staff and US nurses, ranging in qualifications from head nurses of clinics to presidents of national nursing associations. Most had only diploma-level nursing education and a few had baccalaureate degrees. The program utilized varied teaching methodologies to create an integrated curriculum that used proven adult learning models. Faculty members for INLI were US nurse leaders who, in subsequent years, were joined by nurses chosen from among the INLI graduates. Participants were trained in leadership, management, public speaking, and publishing, and were encouraged to become part of a dynamic community of colleagues and peers. At the end of the formal sessions, participants were asked to develop a project in their home countries that would enhance healthcare and the nursing profession at a regional level. AIHA also began a small grants program designed to help these nurses in their efforts and all graduates were encouraged to apply. A total of 56 nursing professionals have received more than 12,000 hours of training through INLI and, in turn, are passing along their newly-acquired knowledge and skills to colleagues at hospitals and clinics throughout the region. Each class of the Institute was given a theme related to a contemporary management book, such as Who Moved My Cheese? and Goldilocks on Management. The sessions were held in the United States and Russia, as well as England and Denmark. Three classes have graduated from INLI. Class I, which was held from June, 1999 to July, 2000, was attended by 14 NIS and four CEE nurses largely drawn from AIHA partnerships. Class II, which was held from July, 2000 to June, 2001, was attended by 16 nurses from AIHA’s primary healthcare partnerships in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine. Class III, which was held from November, 2001 to June, 2002, was attended by 22 nurses from six NIS countries. Of these nurses, 23 were subsequently promoted to leadership positions due in part to their newly gained skills. INLI Small Grants Program Through a competitive application process, 21 graduates were awarded funding for projects focused on association building, clinical practice, leadership, and curriculum development. The graduates represented Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine. Continue reading about the Nursing Leadership program. |
